Hey, I'm Matt, an AI engineer and consultant. Three things that I love are AI, data, and Guinness, and so I built this index to map how much a pint costs across Ireland.
I combined data from 4 sources: the Irish Government's CSO data (stopped in 2011), the Google Maps API for 6,500+ pubs and 22,000+ venues, my AI voice agent named Rachel who rang pubs across all 32 counties and asked the price of a pint, and people across Ireland who are contributing what they paid to keep the index alive.

47 Perfect Pubs
5.0 Google rating, 20+ reviews. Not one in Dublin.
These are venues out of myths.
They exist!
↑ Pick your county to find them
47 perfect scores. 6,500+ pubs. Not one in Dublin.
Ireland's Perfect Pubs
47 pubs across Ireland have a perfect 5.0 Google rating with at least 20 reviews. Not a single one is in Dublin.
They're in places like Augher, Kilmakilloge, and Rathdowney. Villages where the pub is the community centre, the post office queue, and the place you hear the news first.
The highest-reviewed is Helen's Bar in Kerry with 727 reviews. It's also a B&B, tucked into the hills of Kilmakilloge. Creaton's in Roscommon is a pub, a shop, AND a petrol station. Perfect score.
Northern Ireland leads with 9 perfect pubs. Mayo, Donegal, Cork, and Cavan have 3 each. The pattern is clear: the further from the city, the better the pub.

County Pub Ratings
Best and worst counties by Google rating.

For Better or Worse. Some gems.
Temple Bar has more reviews than the next two pubs combined.
Most Famous Outside Dublin

Galway has 4 in the top 10. Doolin has 2. Trad magnets.

Pubs that double as shops, undertakers, and more.
Two pubs in Ireland are also undertakers. One wake, one pint.
Best Pub Names
The ones that make you do a double take.
Most Unoriginal Pub Name
Opening a pub? Here's what NOT to call it.
'The Corner Village Railway' would statistically be the most Irish pub name possible.
Ireland's Pub Zoo
126 pubs named after animals.
No pub in Ireland is named after a cat.

32+ pubs with Irish names. Galway leads.
The Pub Phonebook

Pub names mirror the census.
Ireland's Pub Palette
Pub names by colour.
Ireland voted Yes. 3% of marriages are same-sex. Zero pubs are named Pink, though two are reportedly painted pink (Sneem and Athlone). Panti, you got this! 💅
The Missing 14 Years
CSO stopped in 2011. We picked it back up.
The CSO tracked pint prices until 2011. Then they stopped. This fills in that information.
How Long to Earn a Pint
Minutes of work at €5.90, by sector.
The person pouring your pint works 20 minutes to afford one.
A Dublin House in Pints
At €5.90 a pint.
One house = 84,746 pints.
The Dublin Tax
Dublin vs the rest of Ireland.
It's quite a bit more to drink in Dublin than elsewhere. Leitrim, Roscommon, and Longford are the highest-rated (4.68-4.70). The least populated counties have the best pubs.
More expensive. Lower rated. The Dublin tax is real.
Spoons vs Ireland
10 Wetherspoons on the island. How do they stack up?
Ireland has 5,200 pubs. 10 are Wetherspoons. All below average.
The Tale of Two Airport Bars
Same terminal, 2.0 stars apart.
Dublin Airport: stop torturing people with bad hospitality experiences. Be better ffs.
How I Built This
The original Guindex was built by a TCD student years ago. It's now defunct. I revived the concept in the age of AI because... why not!
I used the Google Places API to discover 6,560+ venues across Ireland. Then I built an AI caller (Rachel from NI) with ElevenLabs that rang 2,734 pubs and asked the price of a wee pint. 2,125 answered. 2,275 gave a price. Average call: 20 seconds.
Claude extracted prices from the call transcripts. I cross-referenced with 151,900 rows of CSO government statistics going back to 2001 to build 24 years of context around the data.
The result: 2,275 verified pint prices, 919 high confidence, across 32 counties. The most comprehensive picture of what a pint costs in Ireland since the CSO stopped tracking in 2011.
How We Know
AI calls pubs and asks the price.
Voices from Behind the Bar
We called 2,734 pubs. 2,125 answered.
“Listen, they're normally 6.20, but if you can't afford one, we'll buy you one. We'll look after you.”
“Pudgy Guinness is 720 on the ground floor and 740 upstairs.”
The Irish Goodbye
Nobody in Ireland can hang up first.
“Okay, take care. Bye, bye, bye, bye.”
“Lovely, thanks very much. Cheers now, bye! Lovely, thanks very much. Cheers now, bye! Lovely, thanks very much. Cheers now, bye!”
Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Bye, bye, bye, bye.
